A third of March is already gone and it is high time we sum up the last month on the land. February was very mild and lots of plants are putting on substantial growth already. Our kale plants from last year are doing great and we are harvesting small fresh leaves for stir-fries and smoothies on a regular basis.
Today we have something to celebrate. This is our 200th blog post and we are just as excited about our garden and eco-buildings as we were when we started writing about them back in 2015.
As many of you know we are involved in setting up the local Community Garden. Last summer we planted an area close to the entrance with flowers and other plants that attracts wildlife like bees, birds and butterflies. We did not remove plants like dandelions, daisies and clover.
The first part of January was unseasonably mild and we were quite worried as many buds on trees and shrubs started to swell and lots of flowers burst open much too early in the season.

For the second time in the six years we have lived in our cottage, we woke today to miraculous beauty.
When I moved from Sweden to Ireland in 2004 I was most struck by the lack of winter. Coming from a place of snow, ice and soil sometimes frozen solid for months on end, I was amazed when the last leaves falling off the trees and the last flowers of the year were met by hellebores, snowdrops and daffodils without so much as a snowflake to separate them. As we now have past the winter solstice, it is time to look back, remember and be thankful for all that the year brought.
It is nice to have something natural and beautiful to look at each day without having to venture out into the sometimes rainy, windy and quite cold November days we are experiencing at the moment.
November is often thought of as a month when not much is happening in a garden. We can’t agree with that. There are still lots of vegetables to harvest, beds to cover and mulch, areas to clear of unwanted plants and a few cherished newcomers that will need planting.
All of the above is probably the reason why we are a bit behind on posting here on the blog. It is high time for our summary of last month in the garden.
